Today's Picture to Ponder Photos
a Purple Swamphen in Wakodahatchee Wetlands
I expect that these photos should please some of our Australian subscribers since from what I gather from a google search, they are a common bird there, as well as in other parts of the world. It is uncommon here in the United States.
When I first saw the bird I assumed it was a very large purple gallinule. A photographer at Wakodahatchee corrected me. Though they are in the same family, there are differences distinguishable when looking closely. You can compare them yourself by checking out the purple gallinule photos on our GALLINULE photo web page.
With specific regard to today's photos, I've included the top photo, despite it's being cut off, because it's the clearest photo of the bird that I have. I like sharpness of the beautiful colors and the repetition of patterns and shapes in the both the purple swamphen and the water.
I like the feel of the overall movement in the swamphen in the second and in the bottom photo I love the play of the open feathers. Note that what might, at first glance, look like a rock is really a reflection of the bird. The water is very shallow, so nothing special is necessary for a a perch.
Self-Reflecting Queries
Once again, today's swamphen represents, for me, a state that we're often in when we interact with the world, coming from our assumptions, as if they are facts. This time I was open to being wrong about the bird's being a pregnant purple gallinule.
As I'm writing, I recall also that I almost did not register for the smARTist telesummit thinking I was right about it's being only for artists who want to showcase their work. I would have really ripped myself off by staying in that place.
Are there areas in your life right now where you might be acting out of assumptions that things are a certain way and if, in fact, you looked further you might find other valuable alternatives?
One clue to the latter question might be to check out the following. "Are there places, or times, where and when you find yourself defending your ideas and opinions?"
Lastly, for today -
Looking at the second photo of the bird, seemingly closed up, I'm reminded of how often we shut down when faced with fear.
In yesterday's panel interview in the smArtist telesummit call, Molly Gordon, business coach and one of the panel members made what for me was a profound and empowering statement.
Regarding turning around fears, "Make space for them. Sit with them. Feel the discomfort. When you make space for them they do not have to work so hard." You can learn more about Molly on her Shaboom Blog . Be sure to check out the links under her banner at the very top of the page.
This is certainly a new way for me to look at "being" (one of our favorites words her) with fear. How about you?
smARTist Telesummit - Still Seats Available
17 Valuable Sessions in the comfort of your home or office.

I am excited. I had a huge concern that since I'm not looking to sell my art in galleries and to collectors this course would not be for me. There seemed to be enough outside of that to make it worth my making the investment and I, fortunately, let that assumption go.
After yesterday's first panel session, I see that the marketing ideas are helpful across the board, as was so much else that was discussed. I've participated in many, many courses and it's wonderful this time to be among people concerned focussing on the arts.
There is still time to catch up on the first sessions via the recordings. Why not join us. See TELESUMMIT. If you are not an artist or business person, do a friend who is a favor and pass the LINK on to someone . |
