TODAY'S PICTURE TO PONDER PHOTO -
the Green Cay Wetlands Administration Building at dusk
As we were walking on the Green Cay boardwalk at dusk recently, the building in the distance caught my attention. Of course my camera came out to capture the scene.
The building was actually closed and the inside dark. The lights are from the lanterns on the outside walls. To me the whole scene gives off a feeling of serenity and peace.
In part, this may be a result of the overall repetition of horizontal
lines and spaces - the grass, the full spread of the building and the subtle lines of the barely visible, beautiful clouds.
Periodically the effects of and differences between horizontal and vertical lines come up for me. I discussed this last year in one of the issues of Picture to Ponder and linked to a Cornell University article there, discussing of Elements of Art, including LINES. See ISSUE 103.
SELF-REFLECTING QUERIES -
In addition to the peacefulness emanating from the horizontals, I think there is also something of the feeling of being welcomed home. Though the Green Cay Administration building is not, of course, my home, there is something about light shining in the distance that creates that sense for me.
As I write now looking out at a beautiful sunny day in Florida, we are in the midst of preparing for heavy rains and tropical storm winds, downgraded from yesterday's Hurricane Watch. Having been very edgy from the "noise" of the reports over the last day and concerns on the "what ifs", the above scene, again for me, represents a beacon for grounding and assuredness of "All's Well," a haven of safety.
For the most part I avoid listening to the "news" and reports on the different hurricane watches and what's happening. On the other hand, there comes the point where I need to also take responsibility for preparation for what could, in fact, happen, however minor.
All of the above leads me to two queries for the day:
1. Are there places in your life where you may be avoiding what you think are "issues", where you might, in fact, create peace for yourself by
looking at them with fresh eyes? Are there actions you might take to fulfill on responsibilities that are "real", or are they simply "shoulds? (Only "simple" if you strip off the "shoulds.")
2. As the lights in the distance were representing "home" to me, what symbols or images might represent security and safety for you... being "home?" Use "home," as the query, only if it's a positive experience for you.
The latter I think is something you could certainly have fun playing with. Enjoy.
