TODAY'S PHOTO -
inside of a gladiolus flower
As I start putting together the first of the Picture to Ponder books for print-on-demand publication, I noted that there are not as many flower photos as I thought there were. Therefore, one day last week, I went to my Publix supermarket to see which flowers "called to me".
The flowers and buds along the stalks that first caught my eye were deep purple in color. I thought they would be a great choice for all you "purple lovers." Then the orange caught my eye for the slight variation in petals and their delicacy. Once at home, I photographed the two colors together and though I liked one of the arrangements (see Gladiola Mixture), today's photo won out for being the featured one.
I love the fresh summer feeling in the photo and the delicacy of the flower. At the same time it has a stateliness. In addition, I especially appreciate how the curves and folds in the edges of the petals are repeated, with subtlety, in the fluting on the top edge of the crystal vase (very bottom of the picture). Barely noticeable in the photo, this still adds an anchor.
SELF-REFLECTING QUERIES -
In relation to today's photo, I've described the curves in the flowers as being repeated in the pattern of the glass vase, two very distinct and different materials. One is natural, the other manmade. Both lines and shapes ARE, however, organic. Interestingly as I'm writing I'm reminded of our photos of Chichuly glass in the gardens at Fairchild. (New subscribers can check the ARCHIVES for issues 33 to 37 and issue 60 to see photos of his sculpture.)
I invite you to look at areas in your life where you are working on big projects. Are there places where you might discover patterns in very different things, which could, in fact hold the whole thing together for you in a new and different way?
In a totally different conversation, I've been spending an inordinate amount of time searching for the original photos that have been used in Picture to Ponder to work from their large size to get the sizes and resolution needed for print publication.
Though I'd vowed, many times, that I would save them in a special folder, I've rarely taken the time to do it. I am now suffering from the long-term cost of that short-term benefit - saving the added 5 or so minutes it initially took.
Bottom line to the story here, because of my current "pain" and aggravation I was prompted to investigate a very simple solution. By simply "trying", I discovered that I could actually change the .jpg number to a descriptive title, in Photoshop Elements and simply drag it into the Picture to Ponder folder, showing in my folders listing on the left in the program, taking less than a minute!!!
(To expain, for those who are not familiar with digital cameras, the pictures when they are downloaded have numbers on them, the only way of intitially identifying them.)
I invite you all to look at the places in your life where you are spending a lot of time on single tasks. Are there any where, if you took a few extra minutes now to explore solutions, you might find yourself freeing up time and easing a future path? If so, I invite you to take that action.
Wishing you peace and ease and the joy of discovery.
