TODAY'S PHOTO -
Joining us, a character from outer space. He has slanty eyes, a red-collared shirt, yellow belly, white socks and shoes. He has very large flapping wings and an incredible, almost robotic, jeweled crown.
Is he excited that I saw him and he's welcoming us? Or is he angry and waving us away? Do you see him?
I discovered this "character," when glancing up at a light pole in the parking lot of Wakodahatchee Wetlands. I actually didn't even see him until I looked through my camera viewfinder. Then he popped out at me. I delightedly shared him with a couple of other people, who acknowledged my "imagination." I was pleased.
When I got home, I became inspired to then send the image as a "puzzle" to some friends. I was certain that no one would know what the source was. See LAMP. After getting responses that proved me "wrong," I realized there were some lessons here, so I am now sharing the photos and experience with you.
SELF-REFLECTING QUERIES -
I had gotten so caught up in what I saw, including explaining it to other people, that it became the only thing on which I could focus. I did NOT even see the elements that showed it for what it was, a lamp.
I did NOT see the head as a light bulb. Nor did I see the "belly" and the "pants" as the socket into which the bulb was screwed. I'm still not sure of what the other elements are and that is not the point.
Once more I was hit with the query, how often do I get so fixed on what I see that there is no space for anything else? How about you?
Fortunately for me and those around me, I think, at least hope, that the answer is "not often."
I realized also that this provided an example of an instance where "false pride" could negate a situation. I was so proud of what my imagination had created that I might have been a "poor sport" about people so quickly seeing the "real" thing. I might have put myself down and/or ignored them and their comments.
Can you recall any instances where your pride got in the way of your seeing what else was available? If so, what might you do in similar circumstances in the future? Anything happening now that you can alter?
Note - If expanding your imagination is something you would like, there are still a couple of openings in this next session of THROUGH THE LENS telecourse. We'd love to meet you and have you join us. See below.

IT'S HERE - Tuesday, June 6 - NEW session of
Through the Lens: Access to Transformation - also known as Photo/Creativity Teleclasses.
OVERVIEW -
During this 4-Session Telecourse, participants will experience being in their worlds in expanded ways. Using the camera as a tool, along with in-class discussion, you will begin to notice things you've never seen before.
In addition, the wide variety of interpretations of the same thing that your classmates had adds a whole new dimension to what's possible.
Increased visioning, creativity and productivity, as well as expanded communication, are among the benefits.
Course takes place in:
1. 4 one-hour sessions on a teleconference call which includes individual and shared exercises.
2. Voluntary, in-between sessions, Yahoo groups e-mail. Discussion on assignments and new insights.
3. Posting on the web, via the free FlickR program, of instructor's and participants' photos for feedback and experiencing the excitement of different points of view on the same assignment. |
Classes are recorded to be used for review or should a class be missed.
RESULTS -
Past participants report:
a new ongoing tendency to look and listen with a different eye/ear;
expanded creativity - beginning once again to paint;
more time writing and including the senses in the writing;
having openings on inner levels, as well as visually and externally;
and, as a by-product for some, increased technological proficiency in using their cameras and computers for uploading and transmittal.
