TODAY'S PHOTO -
reflections in a telescopic camera lens. The photo is layered on a background of a second photo which was blurred.
As we were walking, rounding a corner of the boardwalk in Wakodahatchee Wetlands the other night, my eye was caught by the reflections in this camera lens. Since the photographer was busy talking, and not behind the camera, I backed up to take pictures of what I saw. Once downloaded, I found that a couple of photos were blurred. I loved the one in the background above and decided to make a digital composition of the whole experience.
I find the image both exciting and relaxing and, thus, wanted to share it with you. For those who are also intrigued, I've created a web page showing the individual photos
that were used to create this one, plus another digital collage. See LENS REFLECTIONS.
SELF-REFLECTING QUERIES -
Thinking about the lens reflections this morning, an analogy with our own eyes came up for me, with the following queries.
How often do we directly into a person's eye(s)? When we do are we looking at them, being with the person, or looking through them and into what we think is behind the eyes? Do we see ourselves reflected? How does what we see of ourselves match up with what the other person is seeing? (For the answer to the latter question, we would have to ask, not simply assume, as we are prone to do so often.)
As I was having these thoughts, I could not recall seeing my own reflection in the camera's lens and when I went back and looked closely, I, of course, was there as a blur. Had the photographer snapped a photo of me photographing her camera, I would undoubtedly have remained a blur unless she changed her focus.
I invite you to explore eye contact with others in the next few day. If you are not one who ordinarily does this, I especially suggest that you take this on.
Take a moment, in the process, to be aware of your focus.
If you are seeing yourself in the reflections of those eyes, do you then become involved with yourself and lose sight of the other person's eyes? Taking it a little further, in interacting with people, how often do you become involved in your own thoughts and forget theirs?
On a lighter level you may also have fun exploring reflections in other lenses, cameras, microscopes and car headlamps and rear red lights.
