TODAY'S PHOTO -
red tulips opening, heralding the coming of Spring.
This is one of the times when Sam preferred one photo and I another. I went with Sam's choice this time. He said he likes the action in this one, while commenting also that the tulip on the lower right is kissing the others, saying, "I love you." With it we, thus, wish you an active, loving weekend.
To enjoy additional photos, click on TULIPS 2006. These tulips are also announcing the coming of the month April and the American Parkinsons Disease Association's nationwide scheduled Walk-A-Thons to raise funds for research for Parkinson's. This is the one fund-raiser where 100% of the money raised will be going to research.
It is of special interest to us because, as some of you know, Sam has Parkinson's Disease. He was diagnosed with it 9 years ago, on the weekend set for a surprise celebration of his 65th birthday. Yes, we both had surprises that weekend.
Sam and I will be walking with the members of the Southeast Florida chapter
and I've set up a page through a secure service provided by Amazon.com, where anyone interested may make a donation to Parkinson's research, either anonymously or by giving your name and thus getting a receipt.
Should you be interested, you may simply use the Picture
to Ponder - Tulips link or, if you wish to send
a check, go to APDA's Annual
Walk-A-Thon page for our chapter's address or
for one closer to you, if you prefer that. The latter page, with contact names and phone numbers, is also wonderful resource for any of you who might know someone with Parkinson's Disease, or a family member, who is looking for information and support. We belonged to the chapter in NJ before moving and joining the one here in South Florida.
PD is the second most
common neurodegenerative disease experienced by man,
Alzheimer's disease being the most common. See Overview in the Pharmaceutical Journal for some detailed information.
I've also included a few more facts on the Tulips
donation page.
Tulips are the symbol of hope. A red and white tulip
was named after James Parkinson, who did a treatise
on "Shaking Palsy" 200 years ago.
SELF-REFLECTING QUERIES -
The points of today's reflections are, "How often do we NOT do something because of our, perhaps, ungrounded fears?" and, "In not doing that something, how often are we depriving others of unknown opportunities for actions that might enjoy taking?"
Putting out a request for donations in today's issue was difficult for me, despite the fact that I generated it myself. I am thrown back to being 5 years of age and fund raising, selling poppies on a street corner in Philadelphia, for the VFW (Veteran's of Foreign Wars). Anytime I recall the experience, I feel like a waif, begging.
What I forget is that I was simply offering people a choice for doing something that might give them pleasure. I would often forget this, even in later years when, as a profession, I was selling products and services for a variety of companies.
I invite you to look in your life to see if you have been doing someone a disservice by not extending to him or her an invitation to do something with or for you. It could be as simple as taking a walk with you.
What self-defeating messages will you need to put aside? Will you do it?
