TODAY'S PHOTOS -
Coconut Palm Trees on Hollywood Beach, Florida and coconut seedlings in a tree in Lake Worth, FL.
The photo of coconuts on the ground, in the last issue of Picture to Ponder, Volume 2, Number 23, brought several very interesting and varied readers' responses. Some were from people who had never seen what a coconut fruit looks like.
What we saw on Friday was the larger fruit that contains the part of the coconut with which you are most likely familiar, the roundish furry ball which is sold in produce sections. This too needs hammering open to get to the white coconut that most of us know.
Given my passion for the things I've observed with different stages of coconuts over the years, as well as the contributions they've made to my art in the past, I decided to create a web page with additional photos and further descriptions of various stages of growth. See OBSERVATIONS OF COCONUTS' growing cycle.
For those who simply want to enjoy a photo or two on this page, I've chosen two photos for today. The top shows
the coconuts growing in the tree. They are at the inside end of the hanging branch on the right. In terms of the overall photo, I love the peacefulness and serenity of the scene.
The lower photo shows the clusters of seeds and one half of the open pod that contained them all. From my experience, the coconuts initially look like kernels of corn, growing on branches, within an elongated pod of two to three feet. As the pod opens, a tree-like stem inside opens with a series of branches holding the numerous kernels. Most of them drop off. (continued)
And, back to our usual format. For those who love to play with imagery in our photos, I definitely see a head, topped with a crown, in the trunk in the lower portion of photo #2. Hmmm. As I go back and look again I see the Tin Man from the Wizard of Oz.
SELF-REFLECTING QUERIES -
Today's issue took far more time than usual because I've had the "nudge" since getting Friday's responses to share what I've observed about coconuts. My former teacher hat also was knocking.
I've been struggling with this since Friday. I expected it would take a lot of time, both in the writing and in the searching of my files for photos to illustrate what I wanted to share. And, because I felt that there must be some reason that this has been rankling me for the past three or four days, I decided to stick with my original intent and go with creating the page. Already there are some new viable ideas that have opened up for me out of doing this.
Are there places in your life where you have been ignoring inklings of ideas you might be called to impliment?
Are there passions that you have that you'd like others to know about and you've been holding yourself back from expressing them?
What might be available for you if you honored some of them? I invite you to take a baby step or two and check it out.
