TODAY'S
PHOTO -
a rich, red Gerber Daisy.
Having liked the drama of the photos I took last night with the
flash and the resulting background darkness, I experimented this
morning to see what would happen if I used the flash in daylight.
I was pleased to see I got the same dramatic feel, which is what
Sam and I both responded to in this photo.
This flower is one of five in a grouping that was my Publix supermarket
special find yesterday. Several issues ago I spoke of the joy
of having a single bunch of flowers for only $3.94 giving us pleasure
for a week or more. How I delight in these "specials!"
These Gerber Daisies had an added feelng of luxury because each
flower was closed and encased in netting to protect it and each
stem was placed in a long tube to keep it rigid, I suppose, in
transport.
The color and the play of the petals are what is now available
for us to appreciate all week.
SELF-REFLECTING QUERIES -
Where in your life do you find the simple luxuries?
As I speak of "luxury" today, I can't help but think
of Hurricane Katrina, the victims and the devastation. I have
not discussed the situation at all in Picture to Ponder, in part
because I have not been glued to the television, and also because
world situations, as such, are not the focus here. On the other
hand it is something that is with us all
and today, while writing, I've been thinking, "How can I
be speaking about 'luxury' under such circumstances?"
What hundred of thousands of people are experiencing in the United
States right now is life without necessities and, here, I am writing
about "luxury." I guess what I'm really speaking of
is the "luxury" of "feeling" and "responding"
to what we see, what is available for each of us.
Seeing Black people and White people on TV last night holding
hands; reading about activities in a hotel in Dallas, owned by
people I know indirectly; and then talking with a close friend
in Dallas who is in the midst of all that's happening, as she
volunteers with Jewish Family Services feeding, clothing and finding
homes and jobs for people, I'm left with the luxury of the human
spirit, the generosity and compassion of so many!
Again what are the luxuries in your life?
