TODAY'S
PHOTO -
living coral in an aquarium tank
Our two grandsons who live in Macon, GA are visiting with their
parents. Yesterday we went to the Museum of Science and Discovery
in Fort Lauderdale. I was sitting talking with my daughter-in-law
as Jack, age 6, was climbing in a play area, when Will, age 9,
came over, grabbed my arm and said, "Come here, Grandmom!"
He guided me over to fish tanks, their focus being "Coral
Reef Ecology"
I got totally caught up in the colors, textures and movement of
the coral and the fish that were swimming amidst it all. Amongst
other live treasures, there was a fish with luminescent eyes and
another whose fins and tail looked like sea scallops.
When I ran a slide show of the photos I had taken I was particularly
drawn to the coral photo above. What's calling to me are the overall
purples and golds, along with the movement of the almost central
coral. I feel the energy and yet a sense of overall peace.
(Coral, as described on the signage - "Each sac-shaped
coral is a small animal with a mouth that receives food through
stinging tentacles which capture small plants and animals. The
tentacles are host to, and provide protection for algae called
zooxanthellae which supply coral with oxygen and food to grow
their skeleton.")
SELF-REFLECTING QUERIES -
Years ago, bits of coral washed
up onto Hollywood Beach in Florida were a huge pull for me when
I visited my parents. As always it was the color and texture that
had me stop and pick up what I saw.
Some of what I collected became subjects for water color paintings
(see FANTASY
SEASCAPES), which then became the basis for my Master's Degree
in Creative Arts Education from Rutgers University.
To what colors and textures do you most respond? How can you use
and preserve them to provide you with energy and peace?
